Small group discussing improvement options at May 29 workshop

Local Residents Turn Out to Discuss Improvement Options

On March 29th, over 50 local residents and agency staff gathered to discuss future improvements to the SR 46 East corridor. The workshop was the second of three Route 46 East community workshops designed to solicit input for the SR 46 East Comprehensive Corridor Study (CCS).

The meeting began with welcoming remarks from Aileen Loe, Caltrans District 5 Deputy Director, followed by a presentation from Caltrans Project Manager Larry Newland. Larry provided an overview presentation of the planning process and Carolyn Verheyen of MIG then introduced potential corridor improvements and the evening's small group exercise.

The small group activity was designed to generate discussion among participants and provide groups the opportunity to share a set of priority recommendations based on their particular mobility interests and their experiences traveling along the highway and throughout the corridor study area.

The variety of improvement options were classified according to the type of movement they are designed to encourage. Corridor improvement options discussed by small groups included:

  • Intersection improvements
  • Roundabouts
  • Interchanges
  • Overcrossings
  • Undercrossings
  • Pedestrian and bycicle crossings
  • Auxiliary lands
  • Local road additions and improvements
  • A variety of Demand Management Strategies

A variety of project materials were shared at the workshop, including the meeting's agenda, a summary of Paso Robles Gateway Design Standards, and an overview of improvement goals and evaluation criteria for future improvements. Caltrans also shared a list of potential Travel Demand Management Strategies for meeting participants to consult as they consider the best ways to help relieve traffic congestion along the corridor.
